Overview

Located in the historic Ibrahim Pasha Palace, the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts is one of the most important cultural museums in Istanbul. Situated just west of Sultanahmet Square, the museum offers visitors a unique journey through centuries of Turkish and Islamic art. Originally founded in 1914 as the “Evkaf-ı İslâmiye Museum,” it moved to the historic Ibrahim Pasha Palace in 1983. This remarkable palace, built in the 16th century during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent, stands as one of the rare surviving private palaces of the Ottoman period. Inside the museum, visitors can explore an extraordinary collection of Islamic art from across the centuries. The museum is especially renowned for its world-class carpet collection, featuring rare Seljuk carpets and magnificent Ottoman textiles. In addition to carpets, the museum also showcases manuscripts, ceramics, metalwork, glass objects, and ethnographic displays that reflect Turkish daily life over the centuries. A visit typically takes 1.5–2 hours, making it a perfect cultural stop while exploring Istanbul’s historic old city.
