Overview

Located in the historic Ibrahim Pasha Palace, the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts is one of the most important cultural museums in Istanbul. Just west of Sultanahmet Square, it offers a clear and engaging look at centuries of Turkish and Islamic art.

Originally founded in 1914 as the “Evkaf-ı İslâmiye Museum,” it moved to the historic Ibrahim Pasha Palace in 1983. The palace was built in the 16th century during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent and is one of the rare surviving private palaces of the Ottoman period.

Inside, explore Islamic art from across the centuries, with a collection especially known for rare Seljuk carpets and magnificent Ottoman textiles. You can also see manuscripts, ceramics, metalwork, glass objects, and ethnographic displays that reflect Turkish daily life over the centuries.

A visit typically takes 1.5–2 hours, making it a well-paced cultural stop while exploring Istanbul’s historic old city.
