加拉塔塔是世界上最古老的塔之一。它于528年在拜占庭皇帝阿纳斯塔修斯的命令下作为灯塔建造。1204年，这座塔受到严重损坏。1348年，它由热那亚人用石砌材料重建，并被命名为“基督之塔”。重建于1348年完成，并成为当时城市中最大的建筑。1445年至1446年间，加拉塔塔被建成更大的规模。1717年，它被用作火灾观察站。
然而，在塞利姆三世统治期间，加拉塔塔在一场大火中大部分被烧毁。火灾后，这座塔进行了修复，并在1831年的另一场火灾后再次遭到损坏并被修复。1875年，这座塔在一场风暴中倒塌。修复工作于1965年启动，并于1967年完成，使加拉塔塔拥有了今天的外观。加拉塔塔位于伊斯坦布尔贝伊奥卢区的贝雷克扎德地区。
