In the art of illumination, where the most prominent function is the decoration of the text and the clothing of the text, stylized animal, plant and cloud motifs and figures were used as decoration elements. Despite changing tastes and schools, it is known that the harmony of gold and dark blue is a common point in every period.
Qurans, prayer books and other manuscripts are among the manuscripts in which Illumination Art, which has an important place in Turkish Decorative Arts and is not considered separate from Calligraphy, is applied.
The basic material in illumination is gold or paint. Gold is beaten into a thin layer and used as foil. Gold leaf is crushed in water and mixed with gelatin to a certain consistency, and the paint is generally chosen from ocher paints. Synthetic dyes are also used today. The illumination artist first places the motif he has drawn on a piece of paper on a hard boxwood or zinc base and pierces the lines in dots with a needle. Then, he puts this perforated paper on the surface on which it will be applied and fills the holes with a sticky black powder. When the perforated paper is removed, the motif appears on the surface to be applied. This motif is clearly highlighted and filled with gold or paint to create a work of illumination.
